Galileo Text-to-Speech Technology

Galileo Text-to-Speech technology can be used to facilitate test-item comprehension for a wide variety of students. In some cases, Text-to-Speech can serve as an accommodation for students who have impairments or disabilities in learning and comprehending written text. In other cases, Text-to-Speech can be made available as a universal testing tool that supports all students in demonstrating their knowledge and skills. With Galileo Text-to-Speech technology, written text is translated to spoken text and read aloud to students through embedded text-to-speech software. ATI’s in-house expert item development team reviews and approves the spoken text for each item to ensure that it is accurate and easily understood.

The Text-to-Speech feature is available for the pre-built ATI Comprehensive Benchmark Assessment Series and for Essential Standards Assessments in math, ELA, and science. Starting in the 2018-2019 school year, the Text-to-Speech feature can also be requested for customized benchmarks by emailing ATI's Educational Management Services (EMS) team, phoning them at 800.367.4762 or by making the request in the Galileo Assessment Planner.

Text-to-Speech can be enabled for individual students or an entire class of students using the Galileo Schedule Test interface. Coming soon, enable the Text-to-Speech tool for multiple classes at once in the Bulk Scheduler. When the feature is enabled, the student will be presented with an icon that they may click to hear the item read. These students can then use earbuds or headphones to hear the text. When clicking on the speaker icon students are presented with three simple Text-to-Speech options:

  • Hear the Question
  • Hear the Options
  • Hear the Question and Options

Note: Text-to-Speech functionality may be paused and/or stopped by test takers.

Using ATI Text-to-Speech tools, teachers can create new opportunities for all learners and have more solutions for measuring and overcoming students' learning barriers.
